Why aren't schools doing this as part of their curriculum? Why aren't teachers trained to teach these skills? When you answer those questions, it should stimulate many more. Looking at kids today, it's easy to condemn the system. Imagine all the skills we want our kids to have (like handling bullies), and how there is simply NO reason for the woeful inadequacy demonstrated by our children's behavior. Should we be outsourcing our children's entire education?

What do you do when a large group of kids (15) set up a fake Instagram account and pretend to be a love interest, get your kid to open up and share their feelings, and then share it at school and laugh at you?
This is a great question and a very unfortunate situation. I'm SO sorry to hear that any kid and parent have to face such cruel behavior. My first step would be reporting the fake Instagram account. Creating fake accounts to harass people or pretending to be someone else online is against almost every platform's terms. Instagram will likely take action. I'd also inform the school. They have no control over what's said on the web (and neither do you) but all adults should do their best to address and influence this behavior, coaching kids to the best of their ability. After sharing these things, I'd focus 100% on helping your child cope and grow in emotional resilience. You can't change the past but you can prepare them in the present for anything that may happen in the future. Pursing legal action almost ALWAYS causes more issues. You'll have to prove that your child was emotionally traumatized and they'll be forced to relive the incidents again and again, in a public spotlight. Your child (and you) must learn how to move forward, no matter what others say or do. Thankfully, how you feel/deal is in your control. Teach your child to examine the incident by asking: 1. How could it be worse? 2. Will it matter in my future? 3. How could this work out for my good? You can likely find an upside to this massive let down, that will actually make you stronger - in the long run. Also ask, why did they do it? Were they trying to... 1. Bother you? 2. Joke with you? 3. Hurt you because they feel hurt by you? or a combination of these? Search SQUABBLES at JeffVeley.com and you'll learn exactly how to respond. When your child learns how to respond to this behavior directly, he/she will appear strong (even if he/she doesn't feel strong). As a result they are much less likely to be targeted. The greatest two things you can do to help are: 1. Don't give further attention to the aggressors. They can only have power, if the incident continues to make you upset. 2. Role play with your child how to respond (both socially and emotionally). Act it out and rehearse over and over. Reach out via JeffVeley.com if you need help working through this.
